Webb of Dreams: Simpson Posts Back-to-Back Birdies in Playoff to Capture DBC Title

NORTON, Mass. – In the most dramatic finish in the nine-year history of the tournament, Webb Simpson holed a nine-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole, the par-4 17th, to defeat Chez Reavie and capture the 2011 Deutsche Bank Championship.

The win vaults Simpson to the top of the FedExCup point standings with two playoff events remaining. The winner of the FedExCup receives a $10 million first prize.

NORTON, Mass. – Anyone hoping for an exciting finish to the Deutsche Bank Championship will likely get their wish as after Sunday’s third round the only thing that is definite is that almost every player is still in contention.

Perfect morning conditions followed by challenging wind in the afternoon pushed the top of the leaderboard together like an accordion. Bubba Watson, who entered Sunday tied for the 36-hole lead at 10-under, shot a 1-under-par 70 and will be the sole leader, one shot ahead of the pack of Jason Day, Brendan Steele, Chez Reavie, Jerry Kelly and Adam Scott.

NORTON, Mass. – Gusty winds couldn’t keep a trio of golfer that includes Bubba Watson, Masters champion Charl Schwartzel and Adam Scott from playing solid golf in the second round of the Deutsche Bank Championship to take the 36-hole lead heading into Sunday’s third round.

Watson jumped to the lead early in the day, firing a 7-under-par 64, highlighted by an eagle at the 600-yard par-5 7th. It was the second straight day Watson made a 3 on the longest hole on the course.

NORTON, Mass. – The quiet of a professional golf tournament was interrupted not once, but twice, during the second round of play of the Deutsche Bank Championship on Saturday morning at TPC Boston.

The ruckus came at the signature par-3 16th hole as Brandt Snedeker and Greg Chalmers both did the somewhat unthinkable, burying a hole-in-one at the hole playing 146 yards.

NORTON, Mass. – Troy Matteson overcame a bogey at his opening hole, the par-4 10th, and posted five birdies in his final 11 holes to fire a 6-under-par 65 and hold a one shot lead after the opening round of the 2011 Deutsche Bank Championship.

Jerry Kelly, Charl Schwartzel, Y.E. Yang and Luke Donald sit one shot back at 5-under-par.

Keegan Bradley has a very distinct memory about TPC Boston, where he will tee of this weekend in the Deutsche Bank Championship, the second of four PGA Playoff events for the FedExCup.

It was a few years back that Bradley stood on the 14th fairway and watched Tiger Woods hit a booming tee shot down the fairway.

“The first time I ever saw Tiger Woods hit a golf shot was on the 14th hole out here,” said Bradley, a PGA TOUR rookie who nowadays is better known as the reigning PGA Champion having dramatically captured the season’s final major just a few weekends back.
