The first round of this year's Deutsche Bank Championship is in the books and it started with a bang as Canadian Mike Weir tied Vijay Singh's course record of 61 and is the overnight leader at 10-under-par heading in Saturday
Mike's round was one of beauty. He birdied his first four holes and shot a 30 on the front nine, before adding four more birdies on the back nine and nearly eagling the 18th hole. It certainly was inspirational playing for Mike. Congratulations!
There were actually many impressive scores on Friday, as 2004 champion Vijay Singh, along with Heath Slocum, John Merrick and Briny Baird all shot 7-under-par 64s. Two other golfers also shot 6-under-par 65, which means we could be looking at one heck of a winning score come Monday evening.
The weather was absolutely beautiful here again today and because of that we had a great crowd to begin competition play. I love the events that lead up to the tournament itself, but there's really nothing like hearing those familiar roars of the crowd that fans in New England bring with them!
Tonight will be an exciting evening for some of the players. There is a group that will head to Fenway Park to watch the Red Sox battle the Chicago White Sox and Deutsche Bank CEO Seth Waugh will have the honor of throwing out the first pitch prior to the game.
With all of these golfers bringing their best games this week, it seems like the fans are going to be treated to some great golf for the next three days. If you weren't here today, I hope that we'll see you here tomorrow! The Playoffs are back.
