From the Director's Desk - Baldy's Blue Notes - August 31st
Posted by Eric Baldwin (09/01/2008 01:37AM )For the first time all week, the winds picked up today at the TPC Boston course and with it, so to did the scores in the third round of the Deutsche Bank Championship. After back-to-back days where players threatened to break the course record, Sunday's lowest score was an 8-under 63, shot by Ben Crane and Camilo Villegas.
Because of the fact that the rest of the field struggled to score well, both Crane and Villegas catapulted up the leader board. Ben is tied for 5th at 13-under and Camilo is in second at -16. Both of those golfers, though, will have to chase Canadian Mike Weir, who followed up a course-record tying 61 on Friday with a 3-under 68 on Saturday and a 4-under 67 on Sunday. Weir, sitting at -17, has a one-shot lead on Villegas. The two will play together in Monday's final pairing.
One interesting thing from Sunday was the fact that we were forced to make a second cut. While typically the only cut we make during a tournament is after the second round, the fact that 16 players made the cut on the number on Saturday forced us to once again cut the field after Sunday.
Because of that only 72 of the 86 players who advanced to Sunday will play in Monday's final round.
Taking a quick look at the leaders, we certainly have an international flair at the top of the Leaderboard. In addition to Weir (Canada) and Villegas (Columbia), we have Sergio Garcia from Spain, Vijay Singh from Fiji, Ernie Else from England and American Ben Crane rounding out the top six golfers.
We're less than 24 hours away from crowning a champion at this year's Deutsche Bank Championship. Given how close all of the leaders are packed together, you know that this will come down to the wire.
Action will get underway on Sunday at 7:50 a.m., when Geoff Ogilvy and Jason Day hit the first tee. Our final pairing of Mike Weir and Camilo Villegas will tee off at 1:40 p.m.
