Defending Champion Singh Hoping Familiar Territory Will Keep Him Alive - September 2nd
Posted by Jim Connelly (09/03/2009 07:36PM )It’s been just one year since Vijay Singh ensure his place in the PGA TOUR Playoff annuls, winning back-to-back Playoff events at The Barclays and the Deutsche Bank Championship to virtually clinch the FedExCup.
A year later, Singh returns to the TPC Boston in search of his third Deutsche Bank Championship title (he also claimed victory in 2004). More importantly, though, Singh enters this weekend fighting for his playoff life.
Having struggled through much of the 2009 season, Singh currently sits 78th in the FedExCup point standings and will need to earn enough points throughout this weekend’s Deutsche Bank Championship to climb into the top 70 in FedExCup points; otherwise he’ll be eliminated when the field for next week’s BMW Championship is trimmed to 70 on Monday night.
“Just have to go out there and play the game that I know,” said Singh about his thoughts entering this weekend. “I'm very familiar with the golf course (TPC Boston). There are a few changes every year you come here. There are two holes that have some changes this year, but good changes. I'm playing okay. I'm playing better than I'm scoring.”
That decent play now needs to once again translate for the Fijian. He says that what is most important is focusing on his score and not worrying about what he needs to shot to advance in the playoffs.
“I just have to go out there and just play and try to win the golf tournament and not worry about where I stand in the points,” Singh said. “I know if I play the way I know, I don't think I should have any issue at all.
“It's in the back of my mind. My caddie reminds me of it every now and then, but that's about it.”
Singh says one of his biggest challenges he faces this year translating his work on the driving range and putting green onto the golf course. He feels his practice has been solid but at day’s end, scoring has not.
“The golf swing is good,” said Singh. “I just have to take it out on the golf course. If you watch me on the range, I can't miss a shot. I just have to take it on the golf course.”
This could be the breakthrough weekend though. His success in the past says that could likely be the case. In addition to his victories in 2004 and 2008, he fired a course-record 61 in 2006 only to fall on the final day in a head’s up duel with Tiger Woods.
Those stats are hardly lost on Singh.
“This venue is probably going to bring me my confidence, some of my confidence back,” said Singh. “I'm looking forward to the week.”
