Team New England Defeats Team USA, 44-28, to Capture John D. Mineck DBC Junior Cup - September 6th

HINGHAM, Mass. (September 6, 2009) – Top junior amateur golfers nationwide battled in the fourth-annual John D. Mineck DBC Junior Cup, Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 5-6) at Boston Golf Club in Hingham, Mass. Team New England jumped out to a quick start in Saturday’s opening round and played steady in Sunday’s second and final round to capture the title in the two-day team event, 44-28.

For the second consecutive year, the event carried the name of its late co-founder, John D. Mineck. A long-time supporter of junior golf, Mineck passed away in 2007.

A total of 36 players (ages 11-18) competed in this year’s John D. Mineck DBC Junior Cup. As they did in 2008, the teams were divided geographically – one team representing New England, the other the remainder of the United States.

“This weekend, we were able to share our club with the top talent in junior golf from around the nation,” said Rob Ketterson, President of Boston Golf Club. “Congratulations to Team New England and Captain Brad Adamonis for a hard-fought and well-earned victory.”

The invitational tournament was part of a full line-up of events that were part of this year’s Deutsche Bank Championship, a PGA TOUR Playoff event held through Labor Day at TPC Boston in Norton, Mass.

The tournament featured 18 four-player, best-ball matches in a Ryder Cup format over the two days. Each match was worth a total of four points, meaning that a team must earn 36½ points to clinch the title.

Team New England got off to a fast start, grabbing a 22-14 lead through the first day of play, meaning the team would need just 14½ points in Sunday’s matches to clinch the title.

In Sunday’s second round, Team New England continued its strong play, earning 14 points in the first four matches en route to another 22-14 matchday win, and avenging last year’s defeat to Team USA.
