Waugh talks to the media about the golf tournament's sponsorship, players and potential changes

On Monday, 2 August, the Deutsche Bank Championship (DBC), New England's premier PGA TOUR event, held its season-opening news conference at TPC Boston in Norton, MA.  Nearly 100 sports and financial journalists representing local and national media outlets engaged in a discussion about the upcoming Labor Day weekend tournament with Seth Waugh, CEO of Deutsche Bank Americas, Eric Baldwin, Championship Director, Brad Williams, General Manager of TPC Boston, Pat Moscaritolo, President and CEO of Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau, Lieutenant Colonel John Driscoll, Massachusetts National Guard, and Steve Stricker, defending DBC champion.

Lt. Col. Driscoll presented a True Patriot plaque to Waugh in appreciation for the Bank's tribute to the efforts of the United States military. As part of the DBC military program, all active, reserve and retired military service members and their dependents will receive complimentary admission throughout the week and will be able to enjoy the tournament from the Military Patriot Outpost area on the 17th hole.

Moscaritolo noted that according to an economic study by the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau, DBC had a direct and indirect spending impact of USD 61m in 2009 for the Boston-Providence area.

This year marks the eighth DBC, which will take place from 31 August to 6 September at TPC Boston. It will feature the top 100 PGA TOUR golfers as they compete in the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup and the USD 10m first prize. Defending champion, Steve Stricker, is expected to take on the world's best, including past DBC champions Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott, Vijay Singh, Tiger Woods and many more.  In addition to showcasing a world-class golf tournament, the DBC has raised over USD 17m for charity over the past seven years.

Williams provided reporters with an overview of the TPC Boston course and noted a few changes: "The course was renovated to present a greater challenge to players, making the game more interesting to play and watch. The par-5 second hole now has left-side mounds and a reshaped green, and the par-3 third hole has a new tee box," he explained.

Plaque reads: "Presented to an American Patriot for support of National Guard Soldiers who are defending freedom at home and around the world. The American flag in the case is a replica of those worn by National Guard Soldiers. The flag insignia is reversed to suggest the flag is flying in the breeze as the soldiers move forward."
