Baldy's Blue Notes
Posted by Eric Baldwin (06/12/2008 08:08AM )Welcome to Baldy's Blue Notes, my first entry in the world of blogging. From now until the conclusion of this year's Deutsche Bank Championship, I'll be using this space to talk about all things golf. From preparations for this year's Championship to the goings on of the PGA TOUR, I hope to be able to share with you some worthwhile tidbits about the game we all love so much.
What better time to start blogging than now with the U.S. Open just hours away. This year, our nation's championship travels to California and Torrey Pines, a simply magnificent destination for an event of this magnitude. The U.S. Open is always a great event on the golf calendar, and this year the United States Golf Association is pulling out all of the stops. Having the fortune of hosting this tournament on the West Coast allows the USGA to push back tee times each day and broadcast the event in the prime time hours on the East Coast. It will be great this weekend to turn on the TV at night time and watch the best in the game of golf tee it up.The USGA is also taking a cue from last year's PGA TOUR Playoffs. For the opening two rounds of this year's U.S. Open, each of the top 12 players in the world will be grouped together in threesomes. The premier grouping in that bunch matches World No. 1 Tiger Woods, with World No. 2 Phil Mickelson and World No. 3 Adam Scott (ironically, all three of them are past champions at the Deutsche Bank Championship).A year ago, the PGA TOUR did something similar, developing the groupings for the opening two rounds of all PGA TOUR Playoff events using the FedExCup point standings. Many of you will remember the massive galleries that followed one of the all-time classics trios of Woods, Mickelson and Vijay Singh in the opening two rounds of the DBC. This was obviously a successful practice for the PGA TOUR during last year’s Playoffs, and I think it is great to see the USGA following suit for the Open. For me, the U.S. Open is almost like the official start to summer. And with it, the countdown to this year's Deutsche Bank Championship officially begins. A reminder that tickets for this year's Deutsche Bank Championship are now on sale. You can reserve your spot to witness golf's best tee it up at the TPC Boston on Labor Day Weekend by going to www.dbchampionship.com, calling 877-TIX-4-DBC or by visiting any Stop & Shop location. Remember, Deutsche Bank Championship tickets make a great Father's Day gift. I hope all of you enjoy this week's U.S. Open and will check back often as I continue to blog throughout the summer.
